In the proposed design solution, the heavy lead grid has been replaced with a matrix made of reticulated vitreous carbon. The RVC matrix is 8 times as light as the former component, thus providing light battery weight without affecting its capacity, or increasing its specific energy (Wh/kg) by as much as 50% while maintaining same weight. The technology was developed by the staff of the University of Warsaw, Industrial Chemistry Research Institute, and Institute of Non-ferrous Metals, in cooperation with the company Jenox Akumulatory Sp. z o.o.

The technology was evaluated and its evaluation has been updated, both under the SPIN-TECH Project Phase A.
